In this talk, local art historian Rena Hume will explore the radical artistic rebellion of 1897, when a group of formidably talented Austrian artists broke away from the conservative academic art establishment to form the Vienna Secession – a movement which revolutionised modern art through symbolism and the concept of a ‘total work of art’. Gustav Klimt was its founding member and president until 1908. During these years, he went through an artistic evolution from a traditional painter into an avant-garde pioneer, culminating in his iconic Byzantine-inspired Golden Phase.

The event will be in the Kings Chapel, 30 High St, Amersham HP7 0DJ. The access to the chapel is via the Kings Arms car park. Doors open at 7.30pm when coffee/tea will be served and the talk will start at 8pm.

All are welcome. Admission is £5.
