BENJAMIN ROBERTSHAW’S MEMOIRS
a dramatic reading
Rev Benjamin Robertshaw was Rector of Amersham from 1728 until his death in 1744. He was born in 1679 in Burnley, Lancashire, homeschooled by his father and graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford. He first arrived in Amersham in 1702 to run the free grammar school. Ordained two years later, he steadily rose through the clerical ranks—from Curate at Amersham and Chalfont St Giles to Vicar of Penn and finally Rector of Amersham.
His memoirs offer a glimpse into his character and opinions, and are about Amersham, his relationship with the Drake family and building the (Old) Rectory, which was completed in 1736 and became his lasting legacy to the town.
In the performance directed by well-known local actor Stan Pretty, Robertshaw’s memoirs will be read by actor Don Crerar and, as a special bonus, Earl Howe will read the memorandum of his nemesis, Daniel Baker.
This special event to celebrate the Society’s 70th Anniversary will be held in St Mary’s Church, Church St, Amersham HP7 0DB. Doors open at 7.30pm and the performance will start at 8.00pm.
All are welcome. Admission is £5, all proceeds will go to the church.
