BENJAMIN ROBERTSHAW’S MEMOIRS
a dramatic reading
Benjamin Robertshaw was the rector of Amersham from 1728 until his death in 1744. After graduating from Brasenose College, Oxford, he arrived in Amersham in 1702 to run the Free School at the invitation of the rector at the time, Humphry Drake. He was ordained two years later and rose through the clerical ranks, becoming curate at Amersham and Chalfont St Giles, vicar of Penn in 1716, and rector of Amersham in May 1728. He had a reputation for being a man of strong principles, a high-churchman, a scholar, and a man of action.
His memoir—15 closely written pages preserved in the Bucks Archaeological Society’s library—has now been fully deciphered and transcribed. It will be read by the actor Don Crerar. As a special bonus, Earl Howe will read the memorandum of Daniel Baker, whom Benjamin branded “a silly but zealous Justice of the Peace”. The production is directed by well-known local actor Stan Pretty, whom many will remember as the director of the Martyrs Plays for the Amersham Museum.
This additional event to celebrate the Society’s 70th Anniversary will be held in St Mary’s Church, Church St, Amersham HP7 0DB. Doors open at 7.30pm and the performance will start at 8.00pm.
