Join a guided walk to learn more about life – and death – in Tudor Amersham. Guides in 16th century costumes will tell you about the the markets and fairs, the housing and work, language and health. You will learn about the very different diets of the rich and poor – but did the poor have a healthier diet? Learn why the weak go to the wall and when you could put a feather in your cap! What were the beliefs of the time? Why were 6 men and 1 woman burnt to death and where? We will pass the cottage where the Lollard heretics held their secret meetings and the inn where they were imprisoned – is it haunted by one of their guards or by the daughter who was forced to light her father’s pyre?
The walk stops at about 8 places, some directly relevant to events of the time. It lasts about 2¼ hours (short-cut possible) and includes a climb up through the fields (taken slowly!). The Amersham Museum has now re-opened after building work, so why not take the opportunity to explore the re-imagined Museum and then do the walk, with a reduced-price combined ticket (£5). The Museum opens at 12.0 midday and there is no need to book for a place on the walk – simply turn up, whatever the weather.
