Why do Everest climbers wear big, puffy down suits? Why does it take 2 months to climb the 8,848m mountain while climbing Mont Blanc (4,810m) takes just 2 days? Why is it that humans can’t survive for long above 8,000m in the so-called “death zone”?

Physicist and mountaineer Dr. Melanie Windridge answers these questions and more. Telling the story of her own summit attempt, Melanie investigates why climbing Everest has become safer over the last twenty years and how advances in technology are enabling ordinary people to survive the extremes.

Coffee/tea and biscuits will be available from 7.30pm. The talk starts at 8.00pm. No booking necessary. Guests and new members welcome.

On-site parking is normally available and there is good disabled access.
